Every step matters, especially when it helps keep children safe. This June, families across Virginia are invited to join Lace Up for Firearm Safety, a virtual 5K hosted by Child Care Aware of Virginia. From June 1–7, participants can walk, run, or move in any way they choose to raise awareness about safe firearm storage and prevent children’s access to unsecured firearms. Join them on Saturday, June 6th for the 5K & Family Day Event.

Why This 5K Matters
Firearms remain one of the leading causes of death for children and teens in the United States. Many of these tragedies are preventable through safe storage practices, keeping firearms locked, unloaded, and out of children’s reach.
By participating in Lace Up for Firearm Safety, families aren’t just logging miles. They’re helping expand access to firearm locks, educational materials, and safety resources for caregivers across the Commonwealth. Each registration directly supports this mission.
How to Participate
Joining the movement is simple and accessible for all ages and abilities.
1. Register
A $20 donation secures your spot in the virtual 5K and includes:
- A firearm lock and educational materials provided to a Virginia caregiver
- A personal fundraising page to share your story
- Direct support for Child Care Aware of Virginia’s statewide safety initiatives.

2. Choose Your Way to Move
Participants can complete their 5K (3.1 miles) anytime between June 1–7:
In‑Person Community Walk
Join families and supporters at Deep Run Park in Henrico, VA on Saturday, June 6 from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. for a community‑powered morning of movement and connection.
Virtual Participation
Walk your neighborhood, hit a local trail, or hop on a treadmill. Every mile counts!
3. Wear Orange & Spread the Word
Orange is the national color of gun violence awareness. Participants are encouraged to wear their brightest orange and share photos using #LaceUp4FirearmSafety while tagging @vachildcare to amplify the message.
A Family‑Friendly Event
Children riding in strollers are welcome and do not need to be registered. Lace Up for Firearm Safety is designed to bring families together because conversations about safety start at home, and community support makes them stronger.
Community Partners Making a Difference
Child Care Aware of Virginia proudly recognizes the Primrose School of Ashburn as a dedicated partner in this year’s event. Their support helps expand the reach of firearm safety education and ensures more families receive the tools they need to keep children safe.
Walk a single mile or complete the full 3.1, every step sends a powerful message: safe storage saves lives. Together, we can reduce preventable injuries, support caregivers, and make Virginia a safer place for every child.
